A well-built surfboard can last for years if you treat it right. A few simple habits protect your investment and keep it surfing the way it was shaped to.
Store it out of the sun and heat
Sun and heat are a surfboard's worst enemy. They cause yellowing and, worse, delamination, where the board's skin lifts away from the foam. Never leave your board in a hot car, which acts like a greenhouse, and store it out of direct sunlight. A wall rack that cradles the board and lifts it off the ground prevents pressure dings, and a board bag or sock adds another layer of protection.
Handle dings right away
If you ding your board, stop surfing it until it is repaired. A crack lets water into the foam, which adds weight and weakens the board over time. Keep a small ding-repair kit handy for quick fixes. One important note: know whether your board is traditional PU or epoxy/EPS, and use the matching resin. Polyester resin will eat the EPS foam in many epoxy boards, so a compatible epoxy or UV-cure kit is the safe choice when in doubt.
Pack it well for travel
For flights and road trips, use a padded travel bag, ideally 5mm or thicker, with sturdy zippers. Wrap extra padding around the nose and rails, the most vulnerable points, and fill empty space with clothing or foam. Remove your fins and pack them separately so they cannot dig into the board in transit, and loosen anything that could press into the deck.
Rinse and reset
After salty or hard sessions, a quick freshwater rinse and a dry, shaded spot go a long way. Treat the board well and it will return the favor.
