About XTR

Leading the Revolution Since 1991

XTR Epoxy Technology was founded by Javier Huarcaya-Pro in Oceanside, California with one specific goal: to provide world-class epoxy glassing services to Southern California's best shapers. Starting small—glassing sailboards, paddle boards, wave skis, and surfboards—XTR grew as epoxy construction gained momentum across the industry.

Over three decades, the craft's top names have trusted XTR: Dick Brewer, Dale Velzy, Bill Stewart, Phil Edwards, Gary Linden, Al Merrick, Rusty Preisendorfer, Matt Biolos, Jon Pyzel, and many more. Today, XTR builds custom epoxy surfboards using industry-leading carbon composites, fiberglass weaves, epoxy resins, and always 100% waterproof closed-cell eXTRuded foam.

Construction

XTR 10 Foam Core Technology

XTR surfboards are built with XTR 10 foam core technology — 100% waterproof, extruded closed-cell foam that balances strength, flexibility, and durability. Unlike other epoxy boards, XTR eliminates the typical “chatter” and “overly buoyant” feel, delivering a True to Poly experience: smooth, stable, and responsive even in choppy conditions. The closed-cell foam structure ensures zero water absorption in case of a ding, keeping performance intact for the life of the board.

Four distinct construction options are available, each within a specific flex value range, allowing you to tailor the board to your weight, riding style, and wave conditions.

Parallel Carbon

Flex Value: 6–8 · Grovelers & Hybrids

Torsional flex — maximum spring, pop, and response.

Precise carbon filament layup runs parallel to your stance directly to the fin boxes, creating instant drive, speed, and responsiveness. XTReme loading of pressure and release of spring results in equal amounts of pop and response — the most of any construction offered. Ideal for head-high and under conditions. Comes standard with carbon tail patches.

Carbon Lite

Flex Value: 5–6 · Shortboards

Linear flex — mimics wood stringer with added spring and response.

Lightweight carbon fiber placed directly on the XTR foam core from nose to tail — top and bottom — provides liveliness, spring, and pop while maintaining traditional center-stringer stiffness. The carbon fiber's high strength-to-weight ratio allows for a thinner, lighter build, increasing maneuverability and performance. Ideal for shoulder-high to overhead conditions. Comes standard with carbon tail patches.

Single Lite

Flex Value: 4–5 · All-Around

Linear flex — highly versatile, great intro to stringerless construction.

Eight carbon filaments in a diamond-cut carbon strip deck inlay integrated with carbon tail patches provide forgiveness, support, and durability. A full carbon strip bottom maintains the board's rocker line, delivering a lively, responsive flex true to a standard wood stringer feel. Works across weight ranges, surf styles, and wave conditions. Comes standard with carbon tail patches.

Wood Stringer

Flex Value: 2 · Bigger Surf

Linear flex — stiffest construction, closest to traditional PU feel.

The most PU-like feel of all XTR constructions — ideal for surfers who prefer a stable, controlled ride, especially in bigger surf. All the benefits of XTR 10 foam core and industry-leading epoxy resin with the traditional feel of a wood stringer flex. The added liveliness and durability XTR is known for, in the construction you already understand.
